March 2026: Trinity?

In February, I spent four days discussing Theology of the Trinity. I have been in the
church all of my life, and I have been studying theology for 16 years, so you might
think I’ve had lots of time to contemplate this core aspect of Christian belief. The
truth is it doesn’t seem to come up that often. It’s not that I’ve never considered it or read Scripture about it. But none of my courses in seminary or books I’ve read since then had the Trinity as their focus.

One of our discussions on day one of the course was reflecting on examples of the
Trinity in our church experiences. Most of us could identify examples of talking
about each part of the Trinity: Father/Creator is great for thinking about Old
Testament God. We talk a lot about Jesus during Advent and Lent, and we can’t
forget about the Holy Spirit, at least at Pentecost. But many of us were stumped
when thinking about times where we spent time thinking about the Trinity as a
whole or about how to understand the connection between the 1 and the 3.

One of the reasons for this is it can feel like it has no practical impact on our day to
day lives. How does understanding the “perichoresis” (good academic word, isn’t
it?) of God affect how I treat my neighbour or whether I go to church on Sunday?
It’s a fair question. Yet Jesus connected how we love God with how we love our
neighbour. I would add that the way we love God is impacted by who we
understand God to be. So while we can only ever understand God in some small
way, the effort to try is an important part of our faith journey.

With that in mind, and out of my own desire to share glimpses of what I am learning
with you, so that you are part of this journey, we are going to talk about the Trinity
on two different Sundays this month. I hope you find it interesting, and I hope it
helps you deepen your faith in the Triune God who loves you dearly. Let me know
how I do!

Please take a look at the calendar for events happening in March! As always, I
hope to see you around, at church, in the neighbourhood, or
through a visit. Just give me a call or an email to set up a time!

Blessings,
Meg
